Whale Galaxy
The Whale Galaxy, also known as Caldwell 32, is a barred spiral galaxy situated in the constellation Canes Venatici, approximately 30 million light-years from Earth. It was discovered by the German-British astronomer William Herschel on March 20, 1787. Its slightly distorted wedge shape resembles that of a herring or a whale, which is why it's given that nickname. Since this nearby galaxy is viewed edge-on from Earth, astronomers study it to gain insights into the gas and stars found outside the galaxy's main plane.
