EXPLORE THE REALMS OF KNOWLEDGE

The Moon

The Moon is Earth's only natural satellite, orbiting at an average distance of about 238,854 miles. It is tidally locked, meaning the same side always faces Earth. Composed of terrestrial materials, it has no significant atmosphere or magnetic field and features mountains, impact craters, and vast plains of cooled lava known as maria. Formed around 4.51 billion years ago from debris after a collision between Earth and a Mars-sized body called Theia, the Moon has been essential for human understanding of time, cosmography, and space exploration. Notably, humans first landed on its surface during the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, with plans for future crewed missions starting in the late 2020s.s.
