The Pelican Nebula
The Pelican Nebula, also referred to as IC 5070, is an H II region linked to the North America Nebula, located in the Cygnus constellation. Its shape resembles that of a pelican, which is how it got its name. This nebula is situated near the bright star Deneb and is separated from the more prominent North America Nebula by a dark molecular cloud filled with dust. Both nebulae are part of the larger H II region known as Westerhout 40.
The Pelican Nebula is a popular subject for study due to its dynamic environment of star formation and gas clouds. The energy emitted by young stars is gradually heating up the cold gas and pushing an ionization front outward. Some areas still hold dense filaments of cold gas, with two jets originating from the Herbig–Haro object 555 among them. In millions of years, the Pelican Nebula may look entirely different as the arrangement and dynamics of the stars and gas evolve.
