When it comes to immigration, I do not accept the fear and blame that often fill public debate. Too often people talk as if migrants and refugees are a threat before they talk about them as human beings. I see immigration first as the story of people leaving home because they have to. Some are escaping war. Some are fleeing persecution, poverty, or danger. Many are simply trying to survive. If we want to talk seriously about immigration, I think we have to start there.

Of course immigration brings real questions for governments, local communities, and public services. I am not pretending those questions do not exist. But I do not think they should be answered with panic, cruelty, or political point-scoring. We need honesty, fairness, and compassion. We need policies that deal with real pressures without forgetting that the people involved are human beings. If the whole issue is reduced to numbers, slogans, or election tactics, then we miss what really matters.

For me, immigration is a test of who we are. It shows what kind of values we really live by. How we treat people who are frightened, displaced, or desperate says a lot about our sense of justice and our humanity. I want people to move past the easy fear and ask harder questions about fairness and responsibility. We need responses that are practical, yes, but also decent and humane. That is the standard I think we should be aiming for.
